If you'd like to get a friend to spy on me and find out if I've done something, you might consider using one from whom a question about the previous night doesn't come out of the blue.

Or, maybe just use someone with the tact to not make it so utterly obvious they're fishing for information.

I would have thought that would be common sense but apparently it is not.
