Gordon Ramsay...now fuck off

One of my favorite things to do (and I do it every day) is watch anything and everything featuring Gordon Ramsay. Not only have I got his shows on the BBC, but now a there's a new show on Fox called "Kitchen Nightmares" based on his successful UK program "Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares". All of which keeps me occupied until Season 4 of "Hell's Kitchen" arrives. I've added his official site to my links section...so click, check it...and see how and why Gordon is taking the piss out of bullshitters from one side of the Atlantic to the other.

Lack of sleep may be deadly, research shows

September 24, 2007 06:39:50 AM PST

People who do not get enough sleep are more than twice as likely to die of heart disease, according to a large British study released on Monday.

Although the reasons are unclear, researchers said lack of sleep appeared to be linked to increased blood pressure, which is known to raise the risk of heart attacks and stroke.

A 17-year analysis of 10,000 government workers showed those who cut their sleeping from seven hours a night to five or less faced a 1.7-fold increased risk in mortality from all causes and more than double the risk of cardiovascular death.

The findings highlight a danger in busy modern lifestyles, Francesco Cappuccio, professor of cardiovascular medicine at the University of Warwick's medical school, told the annual conference of the British Sleep Society in Cambridge.

"A third of the population of the UK and over 40 percent in the U.S. regularly sleep less than five hours a night, so it is not a trivial problem," he said in a telephone interview.

"The current pressures in society to cut out sleep, in order to squeeze in more, may not be a good idea -- particularly if you go below five hours."

Previous research has highlighted the potential health risks of shift work and disrupted sleep. But the study by Cappuccio and colleagues, which was supported by British government and U.S. funding, is the first to link duration of sleep and mortality rates.

The study looked at sleep patterns of participants aged 35-55 years at two points in their lives -- 1985-88 and 1992-93 -- and then tracked their mortality rates until 2004.

The results were adjusted to take account of other possible risk factors such as initial age, sex, smoking and alcohol consumption, body mass index, blood pressure and cholesterol.

The correlation with cardiovascular risk in those who slept less in the 1990s than in the 1980s was clear but, curiously, there was also a higher mortality rate in people who increased their sleeping to more than nine hours.

In this case, however, there was no cardiovascular link and Cappuccio said it was possible that longer sleeping could be related to other health problems such as depression or cancer-related fatigue.

"In terms of prevention, our findings indicate that consistently sleeping around seven hours per night is optimal for health," he said.

The Death of "Seem" (or...why you WILL be writen off should this occur)

Let me explain something about a certain kind of FUCKING idiot...when I get a sentence from you that says something along the lines of "I can't seem to find..." or "I can't seem to get it to work..." or anything of that nature with the word "seem" in it...I will IMMEDIATELY write you off from the world of people that use their brain. Hell, I might even write you off from the world of humans. You don't "seem" to not be able to do something...you fucking AREN'T able to do it...PERIOD. You don't "seem" to not be able to find something...you can't fucking find it. The use of this word is a classic example of non-thinking fuck-wads in our society that use buzz words because they think that it makes them sound sophisticated when in all actuality, it makes you look like fucking slack-jawed dipshit! I will not, nor should anyone have to suffer the misuse of this word any fucking more! If you get an IM or e-mail from someone and they "can't seem" to do something...call them out on their rape of the English language...or better yet...ignore the fuck out of them. IT MUST STOP!

Aurora Borealis

One of the most beautiful things to ever grace the night sky here on Earth is one that not everyone will see. Some of us will go our whole lives not ever knowing the majesty of looking up and seeing so much wonder that it fills your heart to overflowing. This is also the case with love...so much beauty, so much to fill you with questions you can't wait to discover the answers to...and yet just as soon as it's come to you, it can leave. You are left powerless...not knowing if you will live to see it again...but you hope...and pray...that this wonderful magic light will grace your life again, never forgetting that you at least got to see it once.

Are You Staying in a Bad Relationship Just to Have a Woman?

By Don Diebel

This week I will focus on men who stay in bad relationships with single women. Some men think that it's better to have a woman - any woman - than no woman at all. My friend, nothing could be further from the truth.

By being trapped in a bad or unsatisfying relationship that doesn't satisfy your needs, you are in a sense preventing yourself from attracting other eligible single women by projecting yourself as unavailable.

Also, by staying in a bad relationship just to have a woman can indicate that you are suffering from some underlying psychological problems, in that you are overly emotionally dependent on women, and that you may suffer from low self-esteem because that you feel that you are nothing without a woman.

Believe me, when I tell you that it's just not worth it to stay in a bad relationship until someone better comes along. The problem is that you could be waiting forever.

In conclusion, if you are stuck in a bad relationship, you owe it to yourself and her to find out why it's not working out - and if the relationship can't be improved, it's best to end the relationship and get on with your life. Life's just too short to spend all your time with someone who makes you miserable.

Les mots de sagesse

1. I love you not because of who you are, but because of who I am when I am with you.

2. No man or woman is worth your tears, and the one who is, won't make you cry.

3. Just because someone doesn't love you the way you want them to, doesn't mean they don't love you with all they have.

4. A true friend is someone who reaches for your hand and touches your heart.

5. The worst way to miss someone is to be sitting right beside them knowing you can't have them.

6. Never frown, even when you are sad, because you never know who is falling in love with your smile.

7. To the world you may be one person, but to one person you may be the world.

8. Don't waste your time on a person, who isn't willing to waste their time on you.

9. Maybe we are supposed to meet a few wrong people before meeting the right one, so that when we finally meet the person, we will know how to be grateful.

10. Don't cry because it is over, smile because it happened.

11. There's always going to be people that hurt you so what you have to do is keep on trusting and just be more careful about who you trust next time around.

12. Make yourself a better person and know who you are before you try and know someone else and expect them to know you.

13. Don't try so hard, the best things come when you least expect them to.

Walter Egan, (born 07.12.48 in Jamaica, New York) is best known for the 1978 hit "Magnet and Steel" from his album Not Shy, produced by Lindsey Buckingham and Richard Dashut. I've always loved this song...something about it is like 50's be-bop but morbid in a drugged-out Glam way. Egan also wrote "Hearts on Fire," covered by Gram Parsons on his album Grevious Angel.

"You're a sunny little shit, I'll give you that much." - Jack Mosley

One of the biggest and best surprises on my DVR was 16 Blocks, a film that surprised me with lots of action and TONS of heart.
We all know that rarely can you go wrong with a Willis movie, and I have to admit to being a Mos Def fan both musically and acting-wise, so I didn't hesitate to give this flick a day in court.
First off, I did go into it thinking, "I know the premise of the movie, therefore I can guess the plot, the story and the outcome..." Wrong!
Without giving too much away, Willis is a washed up, drunk cop assigned to take Def to a court appearance across town...what results isn't what you may think, although maybe you do...but that would you an un-surprisable bore...and chances are you don't read any one's blog but your own so...this one isn't for you.
Long story short...see 16 Blocks. It's one of my favorite movies of 2007 so far and anyone who reads Caveat Lector knows I have good taste in movies...and I'm modest.

Everyone LOVES to Point Fingers (or...how no one likes to find out BOTH sides before forming opinions)

Right off the bat, let me just say that EVERYONE will think this is about them. If you think it is, then "look within" and if you've done nothing wrong or if you've witnessed a situation, think about whether you heard both sides or if you have, (which is what a "friend" would do) have you done anything to help, or have you stood up on your pedestal and been judgemental and only served to exacerbate the situation? People who love to judge others without bothering to find out what the situation involves from BOTH sides before bad-mouthing one and coddling the other do just that...make things more difficult. This is NOT friendship, this is one-sided and shows favoritism and only serves to make matters worse because it doesn't really help either of the people that are really involved. So throw around words like "stalker" if you feel it really is warranted...but before you do...next time try finding out all the facts...that wouldn't just be a "friend" thing to do...it IS what I would have done for you.

Caveat Amore

Love sickness has historically been viewed as a mental illness brought on by the intense changes associated with falling in love. Ibn Sena, the 10th century physician considered to be "the father of modern medicine," viewed obsession as the principal symptom and cause of love sickness. This diagnosis has been out of favor since the collapse of the humoral model and advent of modern scientific psychiatry.

However the concept of being "madly" in love is not simply a poetic notion. For some, the ups and downs of love sickness may actually have diagnostic similarities with mental illness. People who find the feeling of love too intense may experience "love sickness," with feelings of anxiety and can have symptoms of mania, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), inflated self esteem and depression.

A study in The Psychologist, the official publication for the British Psychological Society, concluded that love sickness should be taken more seriously by professionals. According to the author of the study, Frank Tallis, "Many people are referred for help who cannot cope with the intensity of love, have been destabilised by falling in love, or suffer on account of their love being unrequited."

Some of the symptom clusters shared with love sickness include:

  • mania – abnormally elevated mood, inflated self esteem, extravagant gift giving
  • depression – tearfulness, insomnia, loss of concentration
  • OCD – preoccupation, checking (e.g. text messages/emails, etc.), and hoarding valueless but superstitiously resonant items
  • psychologically created physical symptoms, such as upset stomach, change in appetite, insomnia, dizziness, and confusion.

More substantively, the estimated serotonin levels of people falling in love were observed to drop to levels found in patients with OCD (Marazitti et al., 1999). Further, in brain scan investigations, individuals who professed to be ‘truly, deeply and madly’ in love showed activity in several structures in common with in the neuroanatomy of OCD, for example the anterior cingulate cortex and caudate nucleus (Bartels & Zeki, 2000).

Caveat Aeternum

What seems so complex and complicated is really very simple, what is necessary for the better of many should outweigh the few, or the one. No, it's not a question of logic, it's not a question of need or even want...it's a matter of what is right.

In the long and short of life, we are often faced with a crossroad that gets in the way of the greater good, or what is right for many others, and it is at that time that we are faced with how we will answer the question of what to do. This will be a measure of ourselves as human beings...maybe not now, maybe not for some time...or maybe even before the actual question comes out. But, it will be measured.

Stand at that doorway, look into that dark hall, take a step or turn back, but rest assured, this is decision time. This is when you will either shine, or fall short, and either can happen with any decision.

Whom will you effect...?
